Widmyer and Foster Go The Distance in Midweek Sweep of Augusta

Wolves Conclude Long Homestand This Weekend

Newberry, S.C. - After going 2-2 over the weekend against Molloy and Georgia Southwestern, the Newberry Softball Team continued their nearly month long homestand by sweeping the Augusta Jaguars on Tuesday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex.

Game One: Newberry 6, Augusta 2
Early on in game one a pitcher's duel was forming as both Kasey Widmyer and Mary Tillman would exchange zeros for the first two innings. But Widmyer would hold the Jaguars scoreless in the top of the third, recording her fourth strikeout in the process, and opened the scoring in the bottom half with her team leading fifth home run to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead. Newberry would add on later in the inning as Sierra Brogdon drive home Mallena Wright and the Wolves led 2-0 after three completed.

From there the Wolves would plate at least one run in every offensive half inning for the rest of the game. Tori Rose would execute a perfect squeeze bunt to score Hailey Hill in the fourth to make it 3-0. In the fifth, Mallena Wright would hit a rocket triple to right center to score Vanessa Wilson and would later score on a Brogdon sacrifice fly to make it 5-0.

The Jaguars would score their two runs in the top of the sixth by capitalizing off a Newberry error and a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 5-2. But Hannah Towery would deliver the final blow as she would homer to left field to give the Wolves the four run lead they would end the game with as Widmyer would complete her fifth complete game in eight starts by retiring Augusta in order in the top of the seventh.

Game Two: Newberry 6, Augusta 1
Augusta would have the first big scoring chance of the game as they would have two on with only one out but a double play started by an outstanding diving catch by Hannah Towery in foul territory who would double off the runner at third base to quell the Jaguar rally.

The Wolves would condense their scoring into two innings in game two as they would break the ice with three runs in the bottom of the second starting with a Vanessa Wilson RBI double and Wilson would be brought home on a ball hit by Amber Dalfonso that was misthrown and ended up bouncing into deep right field on which Dalfonso would come all the way around to score to make it 3-0 to the Scarlet and Gray.

The Wolves would add three more in the fourth starting with a Mackenzie Turner leadoff home run to left center. The Wolves would add another on a mistake from Augusta where Amber Dalfonso would steal second and draw a throw down, however no Jaguar covered the base and the ball would go into center field where Vanessa Wilson would score. Dalfonso would be brought home on a Mallena Wright RBI single.

Newberry would have a chance for the run rule in the bottom of the fifth as Hannah Towery would lead off with a double but a double play would wipe out any chance of a rally as Augusta would escape unscathed.

In the circle, Lindsey Foster would match Widmyer's stellar performance in the circle with a complete game of her own, only facing four batters over the minimum 21 and only allowing one run on a sixth inning home run. But that run would prove to be too little, too late as Foster would close out the game retiring the next six batters, including initiating the game ending 1-4-3 double play in the top of the seventh.

The Wolves will conclude their 12-game home stand this weekend as they will face Converse and Millersville in a pair of games on both Saturday and Sunday.
