Wolves Ride Historic Performances to Saturday Sweep

Widmyer Sets Program Strikeout Record, Wolves Flirt With Single Game Scoring Record

Newberry, S.C. - After scoring the third most runs in a single game last weekend against Molloy, the Newberry Softball Team upped the ante as they would follow a 7-1 win over the Millersville Marauders with a 20-0 domination of the Converse Valkyries. The 20 runs are tied for the second most runs in a single game in program history and tied for the largest run differential in a single game in program history.

Newberry 7, Millersville 1
The Wolves' bats would heat up on a chilly morning as they would plate six runs in the first two innings with two RBI doubles from Hannah Towery and Mallena Wright and Sierra Brogdon adding RBI doubles of their own to give the Wolves a 6-0 lead after two innings. Newberry would add their seventh run in the sixth inning on a Lindsey Mitchell fielder's choice that scored Vanessa Wilson.

However, the story of the game would be in the circle as Kasey Widmyer would open the game up by recording the first seven outs of the game via strikeout en route to setting a school record for strikeouts in a game as she would strike out 17 Marauders only allowing one hit and one run. The 17 strikeouts are also tied for 36th all-time nationally. Widmyer would also flirt with a no-hitter as she would go six innings without allowing a hit before a leadoff Millersville home run in the seventh broke up her bid.

Newberry 20, Converse 0 (Final/5 Inn.)
The Wolves would once again waste no time to get on the scoreboard as Amber Dalfonso would come home after Converse would try to catch Mallena Wright stealing second. Sierra Brogdon would bring home Dalfonso with an RBI double and Tedi Nunn would bring home Brogdon with a bases loaded walk to give Newberry a 3-0 lead after one inning.

From there the Wolves would pour it on as they would put up a nine spot in the second to increase the lead to 12-0. Newberry would score two runs on errors, including Amber Dalfonso coming all the way around to score on her own hit, and the other seven came on RBIs from Brogdon, Nunn, Dalfonso, Leah Evans, and Mallena Wright. But the Wolves were not done as they would add six more with an RBI groundout from Madison Truett, an Emily Hughes RBI single, an RBI double from Lindsey Mitchell, and a 3 RBI triple from Dalfonso to make it 18-0 after three. Hughes would cap the scoring onslaught in the bottom of the fourth as she would hit a home run that would bounce off the top of the wall in left center field to make it 20-0.

Alexandrea Sullivan would match Widmyer's complete game in the circle as she would only face five batters over the minimum striking out three and only allowing one hit.

The Scarlet and Gray return to the Smith Road Complex to complete their 12-game homestand as they will face Millersville at 10 AM and Converse at 3 PM. After that, Newberry will start SAC play as they travel to Gaffney, S.C. to face the Limestone Saints on Wednesday.
