Men’s Lacrosse Hosts Lees-McRae in 2022 Home Opener, Saturday at 7 PM

Wolves eyeing 2-0 start as the host the Bobcats

Newberry, S.C. - In their first home game since April of last year, the Newberry Men's Lacrosse team will play their 2022 home opener on Saturday (Feb. 12) against the Bobcats of Lees-McRae. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m at Setzler Field!

MATCHUP HISTORY
Saturday's matchup will be just the 2nd meeting all-time between Newberry and Lees-McRae Men's Lacrosse. Newberry is 1-0 against the Bobcats with their last meeting taking place in the 2021 season opener (Feb. 17, 2021). The Wolves escaped Banner Elk, N.C. with a 15-7 road victory. 

MATCHUP PREVIEW 

NEWBERRY

The Scarlet & Gray (1-0, 0-0 SAC) opened the season with a solid performance by dominating the Young Harris Mountain Lions on Wednesday (Feb. 9) in a 15-3 road win. Junior attacker Scott Reed (Ontario, Canada) scored Newberry's first points of the season and tallied two goals in the season opener. Junior midfielder Curtis Bukta led Newberry in scoring by recording a hat trick with a ground ball and an assist. 

Defense propelled the Wolves to their 15-3 victory over the Mountain Lions. Newberry opened Wednesday's game scoring 12 unanswered goals. The Wolves held Young Harris to just 10 shots on goal the entire game and caused 12 turnovers. Junior goalie Jackson Von Eschen (Sayville, N.Y.) saved four goals and only allowed two in 45 minutes played. Senior goalie Owen Latchford (Bluffton, S.C.) stepped in and allowed one goal while recording three saves.

LEES-MCRAE

Lees-McRae (0-2) has yet to find their footing this season after opening their 2022 campaign with a 21-5 loss to nationally ranked Queens University of Charlotte (Feb. 4). The Bobcats also dropped their second game in a home loss to the Lions of Mars Hill University (24-14). Despite a loss in the home opener, Ryan Bird scored a team-high six goals, accompanied by four goals from J.P. Galloway.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

Newberry Men's Lacrosse continues to defend home turf on Saturday, February 19 as they host the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m. at Setzler Field.
