Lady Wolves Defend Home Court Saturday Versus Mars Hill

Wolves meet Mountain Lions in a conference showdown

Newberry, S.C. (January 7, 2022) - The Newberry Wolves Women's basketball team will return home to take on conference foe Mars Hill on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 8) inside Eleazer Arena. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.

MATCHUP HISTORY

Saturday's matchup second meeting of the season and the 57th meeting all-time between Newberry and Mars Hill, with the Wolves boasting an impressive ten-game win streak over the Mountain Lions dating back to 2016.

The last matchup between the Wolves and Mountain Lions took place on Nov. 17, 2021, with Newberry taking the victory in blowout fashion 82-46. 

MATCHUP PREVIEW

NEWBERRY

Newberry (2-11, 2-8 SAC) looks to avoid a five-game losing streak and get their first win of 2022 after a tough loss to conference rival Queens (QU) this past Wednesday (Jan. 5), 58-75 inside Curry Arena. 

The Wolves head into Saturday's face-off with eight players averaging five or more points through 13 games. Junior Giulia Bongiorno leads all Wolves in scoring and assists, averaging 8.7 points per game and 2.1 assists. Giulia has also scored double figures in four of her last six games. 

Redshirt Junior Tyla Stolberg is not too far behind her fellow wolf, averaging 8.5 points per game and 4.5 rebounds on the season.

Redshirt Junior Mylasia Gates looks to continue her success on the boards as she tops the wolves in rebounding with 6.1 rebounds per game and 6.1 points through 13 games. 

MARS HILL

Mars Hill (1-10) seeks to turn their season around and also get their first win of the new year after ending 2021 with a 26-point loss (81-55) to Wingate on Dec. 18 inside Chambers Stadium.  

De'Ja Marshall leads the Mountain Lions in scoring, boasting a 15.2 point per game and 8.8 rebound stat line. Zanah Boyd ranks second in scoring, also averaging double figures with 12.5 points per game and 6.6 rebounds through 11 games. 

LAST ACTION

Wednesday (Jan. 5), the Lady Wolves suffered a 17-point loss (58-75) to conference foe Queens (QU), despite a near double-double (8 Pts, 10 Reb) from South Carolina native Ericka Wiseley. Giulia Bongiorno led the way in scoring with 12 points and five rebounds in just 27 minutes played. 

Costly turnovers have proven to be detrimental for the wolves, averaging 22.5 turnovers in their last four games (0-4). The Wolves look to continue their success against the Mountain Lions this season after dropping a season-high 82 points in their first meeting on Nov. 17, 2021.
