Wolves Fall to Bears, 2-0

NEWBERRY, S.C. -- The Wolves Men's Soccer team was unable to comeback from a halftime deficit, as they fell to the Shaw University Bears 2-0 Saturday evening at the Smith Road Complex. The Wolves are now 0-1-1 on the season.

The game was tied at zero late in the first half when the Bears were able to slip a shot into the back of the net, taking a 1-0 lead with six minutes to go. They would add a second goal three minutes later to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second half, despite Newberry recording nine shots.

Troy Paul led all players with four shots, one of which was on goal. Tre Bonaparte had two shots, both of which were on goal, while Noah Vezzu and Malte Kaiser both had a pair of shots, with Kaiser recording a shot on goal. Jacob Williams played 45 minutes in net for the Wolves, allowing no goals and making three saves in the second half. Leroy Zeller started in net for the Wolves, and recorded a pair of saves. 

Newberry outshot the Bears 14-12, with Shaw recording seven shots on goal. The Wolves were able to get a flurry of shots in the second half, recording nine, though none of them found the back of the net. The Wolves were the recipients of nine corner kicks, compared to four from the Bears.

  • The five saves that Newberry recorded is the most in a single game for the Wolves since Oct. 19, 2019 when they combined for seven in a 5-0 win over Mars Hill. 
  • The nine corner kicks that Newberry took is just one off their 2019 record, which came on Oct. 30 against Shaw, where they had 10 corner kicks,
