Newberry, S.C. - The Newberry College Wolves (8-8 (3-6 SAC)) fell to South Atlantic Conference (SAC) opponent Carson-Newman (10-9 (6-4 SAC)) 3-1 on Friday.
The first set would start off slow before the Eagles used a 5-1 run to take a three-point lead. Kills from Avery Webb and Margaret McMahon would keep the Wolves close, but both teams continued to trade points. After being down by five, the Wolves would use a pair of 4-1 runs that featured back-to-back kills from Natasha Bannister to tie the set at 21-21. However, after Webb tied the set again at 23-23, the Eagles would score consecutive points to take the set 25-23.
The Wolves would start off the second set strong, going on a 4-1 run. The Eagles would tie the set at 4-4, but the Wolves would use a 6-0 run to take a 10-4 lead. The Eagles would use a 6-1 run to cut the Newberry lead to one, but the Wolves would answer with a 8-1 run of their own behind Taylor Hall and McMahon. The Eagles would attempt to rally with a late 7-1 run, but Zoe Dinkins would eventually end the set at 25-22 with a kill.
The Eagles would take control of the third set early with runs of 5-1 and 6-1. Kills from Bannister and Elizabeth Ober would attempt to keep the Wolves in it, but the Eagles would have an answer. The Wolves would go on a late 4-1 rally behind kills from Bannister and Dinkins, but it would not be enough as the Eagles claimed the third set 25-14.
The Wolves would start off the fourth set with a 4-0, but the Eagles would answer with a 5-0 run of their own. Both teams would then trade points before Carson-Newman used a 4-1 run to pull ahead. The Wolves would rally with a 7-1 run that featured multiple kills from Hall to pull within two points. However, the Eagles would go on a 4-0 run to end the set at 25-19, taking the match 3-1.
Bannister and Hall would lead the attack with double-doubles of 14 kills and 12 digs and 13 kills and 11 digs, respectively. Webb would notch a strong 34 assist, 19 dig double-double. On the defensive end, Amanda Berecz would earn 30 digs, and Dinkins would have 5 blocks, 2 of which were solo.
The Wolves return to action on Saturday, Oct. 16 when they host Lincoln Memorial at 2 p.m. in Eleazer Arena.
