Newberry, S.C. - The Newberry Wolves volleyball team (9-8 (4-6 SAC)) earned a 3-0 sweep over the visiting Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters (3-8 (5-12 SAC)) on Saturday.
The Wolves would set the tone early, starting the match with a 6-0 run that was kicked off with back-to-back kills from Natasha Bannister. After trading a few points, Newberry would push their lead more with a 4-1 run behind multiple kills from Bannister. They would soon follow that with another 4-1 run, but this time it was Taylor Hall and Margaret McMahon asserting themselves, pushing the lead out to 20-9. The Railsplitters would attempt to rally with a 4-0 run, but Bannister would soon end the set at 25-15.
The second set would play out much more differently than the first. The Wolves would still take an early lead, but the Railsplitters would just keep hanging within striking distance. After Lincoln Memorial tied the set at 12-12 with a 3-0 spurt, McMahon and Zoe Dinkins would push the lead back out with a 4-0 Newberry run. The Wolves would soon reach their greatest lead of the set at 21-15, but the Railsplitters rallied with a 6-0 run to tie the set at 21-21. Newberry would take the advantage, going up 24-22, but the Railsplitters managed to stave off two set-points to tie the score again. However, McMahon and Elizabeth Ober would not allow the set to extend any further as the Wolves would take it 26-24.
The third set would start off neck-and-neck as the score would be tied six times en route to an 8-8 stalemate. However, Newberry would proceed to go on a 7-1 run behind kills from Bannister and McMahon to take a 15-9 lead. The Railsplitters would go on a 6-1 run to cut the lead to one, but the Wolves would answer with a 5-0 run of their own. After trading a few points, Bannister would end the set and the match with back-to-back kills, taking the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
Bannister led the attack with an 18 kill, 13 dig performance. Avery Webb posted a strong 34 assists and 9 digs as well. On the defensive end, Amanda Berecz and Hall each tallied 15 digs, and Dinkins would be involved in 5 blocks, one of which was solo.
The Wolves return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 20 when they travel to South Atlantic Conference opponent, Catawba. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
