NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves men's basketball team has added two signees, head coach
Jason Taylor announced this week. The two players are Luke Seals from Oklahoma and Zach Shumate from North Carolina.
Seals, a 6'7 wing who is the 19th ranked player in the state of Oklahoma, averaged 11 points and seven rebounds per game during his senior year of high school.
"Luke has all the ability in the world," Taylor said. "He has played multiple positions for his high school team, including point guard, and that has helped him tremendously. He can dribble, pass, shoot, and finish at the basket. Luke is a hard-nosed, defensive-minded individual who was a standout player at Ponca City HS, as well as a major contributor to an elite AAU program (Oklahoma Impact). He will come in ready to compete and contribute from day one.
Shumate, a 6'7 forward, averaged 18 points and nine rebounds per game for Salem Baptist Christian and led them to their first-ever conference championship. As a result, he was named All-Conference, All-Triad, and All-State.
"Zach has more than held his own against some great high school competition," Taylor said. "He comes in physically ready to compete. Zach has great court vision, feel for the game, and has the ability to consistently put the ball in the basket. Zach has been extremely well-coached in high school and will come in ready to contribute.
Taylor on both signees: "I am very excited about Luke and Zach. They bring length and versatility to our roster. They both have good offensive skills that will allow them to play and attack from multiple spots on the court. I expect them both to develop into versatile defenders who can guard multiple positions, which will allow us to make more adjustments when needed. They will both have great careers and I know that they will positively impact the Newberry community."
