Wolves bounce back strong with dominant home win

Win by ten goals for first time in nearly two years

NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves women's lacrosse team got their first win of the season Saturday night with a dominant 17-7 win against Chowan. With the win, the Wolves even their record at 1-1 on the year.

Chowan drew first blood as Tashana Barnett scored less than three minutes into the match, but Chloe Wood evened the score less than a minute later off a free position attempt. The Hawks went up 2-1 when Jordan Nicholson netted her first goal of the season, but the Wolves responded quickly. Marissa Plumer scored her fourth goal of the season; then Wood scored again to give Newberry a 3-2 lead.

Kelly Martyn continued the Newberry run with her third goal of the year, and Wood scored twice more to extend the lead out to 6-2. Sophie Moore then got in on the offensive attack with her fourth goal of the season, netted with just less than 14 minutes remaining to give the Wolves a five goal lead. Chowan cut the lead to four goals when Barnett scored again with nine minutes to play until the half, but Martyn scored another goal to keep the lead at five goals.

Wood then scored again with less than three and a half minutes to play to push the lead out to six goals for the first time all evening. Moore then scored once again to get Newberry into double digits, ending the scoring for the half and giving the Wolves a commanding 10-3 lead.

Barnett got the Hawks back on the right track to begin the second half as she scored less than three minutes in. Later, after a penalty on Newberry, Misten White scored her first goal of the season to cut the lead to 10-5 less than a minute later, but Wood responded with her sixth goal of the game. Neither team was able to get much going for a while before Keegan Hanson netted her first goal of the year to give the Wolves a 12-5 lead. 

Barnett then scored yet again to cut the lead to six goals with just over 15 minutes to play. Moore then scored her third goal of the game to give Newberry a 13-6 lead with less than 12 minutes to play. Plumer then gave the Wolves an eight goal lead with around 10 minutes to play, forcing a Chowan timeout. Barnett then scored once again to shave the lead to seven before Newberry went on a big run to end the game. Martyn scored her third goal of the game with less than four minutes to play to extend the lead back out to eight; then Martyn and Julia Hardiman scored with less than 20 seconds to play to provide the final margin.

Newberry dominated in the hustle statistics on the evening, as they recorded 34 ground balls to Chowan's 19. The Wolves also won the ground control battle 13-12 and forced 30 turnovers while committing just 23. They also outshot the Hawks by a margin of 32-15.

Wood led Newberry with six goals while Martyn notched four, Moore had three, and Plumer had two as they all continued to showcase their offensive prowess.

The Wolves will look to continue their winning ways on Wednesday as they host Lees-McRae.
