Wolves fall to No. 17 Wingate

Boone nets three goals

WINGATE, N.C. – Stone Boone's three first half goals were not enough as No. 17 Wingate defeated Newberry 18-6 Saturday afternoon at Graham Gill Field.

To go along Boone's three goals, the Wolves (8-4, 2-3 SAC) were led by Dylan Mansur with two points (one goal, one assist) while Brady Kearnan and Zachary Sunderland notch a goal each. Justin Messersmith finished with one assist.

Boone got Newberry going early in the first quarter, scoring his first goal in under a minute of action to help set the tone. The Bulldogs responded with two goals to get their first lead of the game with 9:49 to play in the first quarter. Boone was able to draw the Wolves even, scoring his 26th goal of the season with 8:02 remaining. For the remainder of the frame, neither team was able to generate any offense.

Wingate was able to find their offense in the second quarter, scoring four unanswered goals to go up 6-2. Newberry knew that had to stop the momentum if they wanted a chance to knock off the Bulldogs. Messersmith was able to calm down the Wolves to set up Boone for his third goal of the game to cut the deficit to three goals. The Wolves continued to fight over the next four minutes and it paid off as Mansur found Sunderland for his 16th goal of the season to make it 6-4 in favor of Wingate. The Bulldogs were able to find the net two more times to take an 8-4 lead into halftime.

With some first half adjustments, Wingate was able to lockdown the Newberry offense with the Wolves only getting three shots off in the third quarter. The Bulldogs outshot the Wolves 66-37 on the game. In the second half, Newberry was only able to find the net two times to Wingate's 10.

Messersmith and Gregory Gerber Jr. led the way on defense, grabbing five ground balls each. Goalkeeper Erick Szurley was able to get four ground balls while Dan Sullivan and Jeremy Ross chipped in with three ground balls each.

Szurley went the distance in net, making 20 saves including nine big saves in the first quarter to keep the game in reach.
