Wolves valiant effort against No. 10 Queens falls short

Boone's hat trick reaches two games

NEWBERRY – Newberry men's lacrosse played a tough game against No. 10 Queens Wednesday evening at Setzler Filed but fell short, falling 14-9.
 
The Wolves (8-5, 2-4 SAC) were led offensively by Dylan Mansur with four points (1 goal, three assists) and Stone Boone with three goals. Brady Kearnan added two goals while Jeremy Ross, Zachary Sunderland and Justin Messersmith each chipped in a goal each. Ross also had two assists on the night.
 
Newberry found themselves down early in the matchup by a score of 2-0 before Mansur was able to get the Wolves on the board to make it 2-1 with just under five minutes left in the first quarter. Queens was able to push their lead back out to two goals early in the second with a goal from Quinn Tallant.
 
Newberry was able to fight back with goals from Boone and Sunderland less than a minute apart to tie the game at four each. The Wolves were able to take their first lead of the game as Ross found Kearnan with over two minutes left in the half to go up 5-4. Queens was able to tie the game up in the closing seconds of the half to make it 5-5 heading into halftime.
 
Newberry came out into the second half, knowing that they can play with a nationally rank team. The Wolves let up a goal early in the quarter before they came out scoring three unanswered goals. In the run, Messersmith, Ross and Kearnan were all able to find pay dirt to make it 8-6 infavor of the Scarlet and Gray.
 
The Royals were able to find their offense at the halfway point of the third, going on a six goal run into the fourth quarter. Boone was able to tack on one more goal in the fourth but the game was out of reach.
 
Goalkeeper Erick Szurley was great on the defensive end, leading the way with three ground balls. Six Wolves finished with two ground balls each. Dan Sullivan came up big in the defensive end as well, causing three turnovers.
 
Szurley wen the distance in net, making 12 saves.
 
The Wolves will next be in action this Saturday against Lincoln Memorial for their home finale. The game will also mark Newberry's Senior Day.
