Wolves clinch SAC Championship Tournament berth with win on Senior Day

NEWBERRY – The 2019 Newberry men's lacrosse senior class went out with a bang Saturday afternoon, defeating Lincoln Memorial 17-12 to secure a berth into the South Atlantic Conference Championship tournament.
 
The Wolves (9-5, 3-4 SAC) had a huge game from Stone Boone as he finished with seven points (six goals, one assist). Four players finished with four points each including Jeremy Ross (three goals, one assist), Zachary Sunderland (three goals, one assist), Dylan Mansur (two goals, two assists) and Kyle Dinklee (one goal, three assists). Brady Kearnan and Justin Messersmith each finished with one goal and one assist, respectively. Belton Bryan added an assist for Newberry.
 
It was an even game for much of the first half, with the Railsplitters taking a close 7-6 lead into the half.
 
Lincoln Memorial was able to come out I to the second half on fire, going on a 4-0 run to take a commanding 11-6 lead with 8:28 left in the third quarter. The Wolves did not let the sizable lead discourage them, knowing what was one the line with a win and to show out on Senior Day. Ross was able to get the ball rolling for Newberry as he broke the Railsplitters run to make it 11-7 in favor of Lincoln Memorial with 7:24 left in the third quarter. Ross's goal was able to fuel a fire as the Wolves were able to score four more goals to tie the game at 11 each with with 14:32 in the final frame.
 
Chris Tucker was able to halt the strong Newberry offense with a goal in the early stages of the fourth quarter. From there on, the Wolves went on a 7-0 run to get the win. During the run, Boone and Mansur were able to find the net for a pair of goals with Dunklee and Sunderland scoring as well.
 
Jacob Katopol and Neil Swingruber led the way on defense, picking up eight ground balls each. Seven players tied with two ground balls each.
 
Katopol helped get the Wolves offense going, winning 18-of-27 face-offs attempted.
 
Erick Szulrey wen the distance in net, making 12 saves on 24 shots faced.
 
Saturday's game marked Newberry's Senior Day, honoring Stone Boone, Erick Szurley, Garrett Giles, Dylan Mansur, Anthony DeLauerntis, Jared Chant, Jeremy Ross, Jacob Katopol, Dan Sullivan, and Belton Bryan for their dedication to the program.
 
The Wolves will close out the regular season on the road as they travel to Mars Hill next Saturday, April 20 at 2 p.m.
