NEWBERRY – It was tough sledding for the Newberry Wolves (2-12, 0-6 SAC) against the high-powered Queens Royals (12-2, 7-0 SAC), falling to the visiting squad 27-3 in the penultimate home game of the 2019 season.
The Royals pushed ahead to a 5-0 start in the early going to claim a permanent lead, with
Chloe Wood finally getting the Wolves on the board for her team-leading 46th goal of the season.
Following Wood's goal, the Royals were able to tack on another six unanswered before
Sophie Moore was able to momentarily stop the bleeding, making the score 11-2.
Unfortunately for the Wolves, the Royals defense would continue to stiffen and their offense exploded, stringing together 14 consecutive goals to break the game wide open.
Despite the more than 30-minute scoring drought, there were some bright spots in this game for Newberry.
Following the 14-0 run from Queens,
Rachel Dillon was able to find the back of the net, notching her only goal of the day and securing the 150th goal of her terrific career with the Wolves.
Additionally,
Brandy Bowman, who got the start in goal in this game, was able to record the 650th save of her collegiate career during the first half.
Both of these seniors, along with
Adara Garner, will be honored on Saturday, April 13 at noon when they return to Setzler Field for their Senior Day game against the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters.
