NEWBERRY – In the final home game of the 2019 regular season, the Newberry Wolves (2-13, 0-7 SAC) were unable to keep up with the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters (11-5, 5-3 SAC), falling by a score of 22-9.
It was a quick start for the Railsplitters, who scored their first goal of the game less than a minute in, starting a 5-1 scoring run.
Chloe Wood was the lone goal to break up that run, adding to her team lead with her 47th of the season.
Wood was able to find the back of the net again for her 48th of the season, helping light a spark for a 3-0 Wolves run to get them right back into the game.
Rachel Dillon and
Sophie Moore got on the board to cap off that run, making the score 5-4 in favor of LMU.
Unfortunately for the Wolves, the good fortune ended there, as the Railsplitters exploded to score the final six goals of the half to head into the break ahead 11-5.
The second half started well for Newberry thanks to the second goal from Dillon, but ultimately proved to be much of the same as they were outscored by Lincoln Memorial 11-4 following the intermission.
Sydney Britton contributed to the cause in the second half with two goals, while
Sophie Moore scored the final goal of the game with 7:27 remaining to cement the final score at 22-9.
Moore ultimately led the way for the Wolves in goals with a hat trick, while Dillon was extremely active with the ball, scoring two goals and dishing out four assists for a game-high six points.
Brandy Bowman went the distance for the Wolves in goal on senior day, recording 11 saves and one ground ball in net.
Adara Garner led the way on the back line, scooping up three ground balls and causing a team-high three turnovers.
The Wolves were vastly outshot by the Railsplitters by a margin of 43-17, as well as losing the draw control battle by a margin of 22-10.
Newberry will not return to Setzler Field until the 2020 season, but will round out their 2019 campaign as they travel to Chowan on Wednesday, April 17, followed by a trip to conference foe Mars Hill on Saturday, April 20 to end the year.
