Wolves fall to Catawba in conference-opener

Wood slots five goals to lead all scorers

NEWBERRY – The Newberry Wolves (2-5, 0-1 SAC) hosted the Catawba College Indians (2-3, 1-0 SAC) in their South Atlantic Conference opener, but couldn't keep up with the visiting team, falling by a score of 14-7.

The Wolves got off to a slow start, allowing a three-goal run from the Indians to open the game before Rachel Dillon was finally able to get Newberry on the board with an unassisted goal, her 18th goal of the season.

Unfortunately for Newberry, Catawba was able to keep their motor running offensively, forcing in another three goals before the Wolves could muster a response in the form of a Chloe Wood unassisted goal, the first of what would be a another big game for the freshman.

With the deficit at 6-2, Catawba was able to push the issue with two more goals before halftime, making the score 8-2 at the break.

After talking things over, Newberry's came back for the second half with their work cut out for them, and were able to find the back of the net thanks to Wood's second goal of the day.

Catawba refused to let Newberry back into the game so easily, and fired up for a five-goal scoring run over the course of about five minutes to push their led to double-digits, getting ahead of the Wolves 13-3 with 20 minutes to play.

After an eight-minute long scoring drought on both sides, Sophie Moore was able to net her first goal of the day to get things rolling again for the Wolves. Wood followed suit, quickly slotting two goals in 38 seconds to cut the deficit to 13-6, seemingly giving the Wolves new life.

Wood would score one more goal to move her total to five on the day and 27 on the season, but it would not be enough as the Indians tacked on one more to bring the final score to 14-7.

Catawba was able to outshoot Newberry by a margin of 38-20 on the day, while also winning the draw control battle with a margin of 14-9.

Wood led all scorers with five goals, while Catawba's Erin Green finished close behind with four goals herself.

The loss puts Newberry at 0-1 in conference play this season, and they'll get another shot to get back into the win column when they return to Setzler Field on Wednesday, March 13 to take on the Shorter Hawks at 2:00 pm.
