Strong start not enough as Wolves fall to Shorter

Moore leads the way with four goals for Newberry

NEWBERRY – The Newberry Wolves (2-6) were able to get out to a fast start, but ultimately couldn't hold on to their lead against the Shorter Hawks (4-5), losing by a score of 17-12.

The Wolves couldn't have asked for a better start as Sophie Moore broke out for a hat trick in the opening five minutes, putting the Wolves out in front 3-0 on the visiting Hawks.

Following her third goal, however, Shorter was able to get off a quick response, scoring just 12 seconds later to get on the board for the first time. Newberry's Chloe Wood was able to find that back of the net shortly thereafter, but that's when the Hawks initiated their biggest scoring run of the day.

Led by three goals from McKinley Puckett, the Hawks score five unanswered goals to move out in front, securing a lead that they would never relinquish. Wood was again able to slot a goal, but only to be met by another four unanswered goals from the Hawks.

Following their 9-1 scoring run, the Hawks were firmly in control at 10-6 heading into the halftime break, completely flipping the script on what appeared would be a runaway victory in the opening minutes for the Wolves.

As they have often this season, the Wolves were able to stiffen up in the second half, more or less going goal for goal with the Hawks. Wood got things started after the break with her third goal of the day, followed by another quick goal from Moore after a Shorter yellow card.

Sydney Britton and Rachel Dillon were each able to score two goals of their own, but Shorter's Puckett and Allie Perry were able to continue the Hawks' offensive effort in the second half, maintaining a relatively comfortable lead throughout the final 30 minutes.

At the final buzzer, Shorter had defeated the Wolves, who've now suffered their fourth consecutive loss this season.

Puckett led all scorers with eight goals, while Moore was in front for the Wolves with four goals. Shot attempts were nearly even for both sides, with Shorter holding a minimal 28-27 advantage.

Michelle Doby produced a solid showing on the defensive end for the Wolves, picking up a team-high five ground balls as well as causing two turnovers on the day.

Newberry will hit the road for their next game as they take on South Atlantic Conference opponent Coker College on Tuesday, March 19 at 6:00 pm. The Cobras are currently 2-3 on the season with an 0-1 conference record.
