HARTSVILLE – Despite getting off to a decent start in the first half, the Newberry Wolves (2-7, 0-2 SAC) were unable to stop the Coker Cobras (3-4, 1-2 SAC) second-half surge, falling by a score of 25-10.
The Wolves fell behind early after the Cobras opened the game on a 4-1 run, with
Chloe Wood providing the only offense for Newberry; however, the Wolves were able to weather the storm, pouring on a 5-0 run of their own thanks to goals
Rachel Dillon and
Sydney Britton, as well as three-consecutive goals from
Sophie Moore to claim their first lead of the game at 6-4.
Coker's Hannah Shuren scored on a free position goal before Wood and Dillon struck again, extending the Wolves lead to 8-5, the biggest they'd claim all night.
Unfortunately for Newberry, the Cobras were then able to flip the switch offensively. Coker ended the half with four consecutive goals to head into the break ahead 9-8, and continued their dominance to open the second-half.
Coming out of the break, the Cobras capitalized with four consecutive goals in the first four minutes before the Wolves could return fire. Moore and Wood scored within 10 seconds of one another to cut the deficit to 13-10, but it was the last we'd hear from the Wolves offense all night.
The Cobras ended the game with 12 unanswered goals, wrapping up the second half with a 16-2 advantage and ending the game with a victory over the Wolves.
Moore led the way for the Wolves with four goals, while Wood trailed close behind with a hat trick of her own. Dillon slotted two goals while posting a team-high five assists, and
Sydney Britton rounded out the scoring for Newberry with one goal.
Defensively, Bowman recorded 18 saves in goal, while Dillon and
Angel Roberson led the way in ground balls with four and three, respectively.
The Wolves were outshot by the Cobras by a margin of 53-33, while breaking even on draw controls with an 18-18 total.
Newberry returns to action on Saturday, March 23 when they take on South Atlantic Conference opponent Lenoir-Rhyne at noon at Setzler Field.
