Wolves fall short in SAC Quarterfinals at Lenoir-Rhyne

Bears use second quarter run to pull away from Wolves

HICKORY, N.C. – The Newberry women's basketball team fell on the road in the quarterfinals of the SAC women's basketball tournament to Lenoir-Rhyne by a final score of 69-51.

Shelby Britten and Meg Essex led the scoring for the Wolves as both seniors scored 11 points each. Britten dished out eight assists, including six alone in the first quarter for Newberry. Essex grabbed seven boards and recorded a block.

The Wolves jumped out to an early five-point lead on a layup from Meg Essex and a 3-pointer from McCarty. After a 3-pointer from Courtney Lyons, the Bears would take the lead on a 7-0 run. Newberry would end the first quarter just as they started it as McCarty drained her second 3-pointer of the quarter and Essex made another lay-up to tie the game at 15-all.

Lenoir-Rhyne would doom the Wolves as they opened the second quarter with 10 straight points and would later extend their lead to 34-20 at halftime.

After the Bears made a basket to open the third quarter, Newberry would respond with seven straight points to cut the lead to single digits. Lenoir-Rhyne would respond with seven straight points of their own after the Wolves run to retake a double-digit lead.

Newberry would cut the lead to single-digits later on in the quarter after a three-point play from Brandi Hall and a 3-pointer from Britten, but the Bears immediately responded with a 3-pointer of their own to push the lead to 48-36.

The Bears would hold onto their lead throughout the fourth quarter, winning 69-51 to move to the semifinals round of the SAC Tournament.

McCarty stuffed the stat sheet as the senior finished with nine points, seven boards, two steals, and a block. Lyons added eight points, four rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and a steal.

Hall led the scoring effort off the bench for the Wolves, finishing with seven points and eight rebounds.

  • Britten surpassed 400 career assists as the guard dished out eight tonight
    • Britten now sits sixth all-time in Newberry single-season history with 132 assists this year
  • Britten also ranks ninth in SAC single-season history with 86 made 3-pointers this year
