GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Newberry Wolves (2-9, 0-4 SAC) traveled to Greeneville, Tennessee to take on conference foe Tusculum (3-8, 1-2 SAC) in hopes of getting back in the win column, but couldn't overcome the Pioneers, falling by a score of 19-13.
The Wolves got things rolling early with a goal from
Chloe Wood, but from then on the Wolves would struggle.
Despite holding Tusculum scoreless for nearly five minutes to begin the game, the Pioneers were able to get on a roll to the tune of five straight goals to make the score 5-1.
The Wolves struck back with two more goals from Wood, but the Pioneers were able to match and build on their lead.
Rachel Dillon found the back of the net twice and
Sophie Moore once for the Wolves before the break, but at halftime Tusculum was in command of an 11-6 lead.
After the break, the Pioneers were able to strike quickly, but from then on it was an even second half, with each team scoring six more goals.
Wood slotted five second half goals to bring her total to a season-high eight goals in the game, while Dillon tacked on one more and
Angel Roberson got in on the action at the horn.
When the final buzzer sounded, the Wolves had fallen by a final score of 19-13, marking their seventh consecutive loss on the season.
Wood led the way for Newberry with eight goals, while Dillon posted a hat trick of her own. Moore and Roberson chipped in to conclude the scoring for the Wolves.
Brandy Bowman and
Casey McCabe each spent 30 minutes in goal, combining to record 13 saves on the day.
The Wolves were outshot by the Pioneers 34-27, as well as losing the turnover battle 20-14 in the game.
Newberry returns to Setzler Field on Wednesday, April 3 for a 5:00 pm non-conference matchup with North Greenville University.
