Wolves overcome slow start; defeat Tusculum 16-13

Dunklee leads the way with five points

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – A seven-goal second quarter helps Newberry to a 16-13 win over Tusculum Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
 
Kyle Dunklee continues to shine for the Wolves (8-3, 2-2 SAC), leading the offensive with five points (four goals, one assist). Brady Kearnan (three goals, one assists) and Zachary Sunderland (two goals, two assists) had four points each. Stone Boone added three goals while Dylan Mansur, Neil Swingruber, Jeremy Ross and Gregory Gerber Jr. ship in with one goal each, respectively. Justin Messrsmith had on e assist on the afternoon.
 
Tusculum got on the board first after nearly four minutes of action with Sunderland scoring is first goal seconds later to make it 1-1 with 10:26 to play in the first quarter. The teams traded one goal each before the Pioneers were able top string together three straight goals to make it 5-2 with just over five minutes in the first frame. Kearnan was able to get in the scoring column with :26 left ion the clock to make it 5-3 after one.
 
Keegan Bell for his third goal of the game for Tusculum with under 10 minutes to go before halftime. Newberry was able to get a spark on offense, scoring three unanswered goals to draw even. Bell scored a man-up goal for the Pioneers to make it 7-6 with five minutes before halftime. Kearnan was able to get Newberry's first lead of the game with two straight goals to make it 8-7. Gerber Jr. scored his first collegiate goal with 1:56 to go to make it 9-7 in favor of the Wolves. With the clock ticking down in the second, Mansur was able to find the back the back of the net to give Newberry the 10-8 lead going into intermission.
 
Newberry was able t maintain the lead in the second half though the Pioneers did not go away quietly. To start the second half, Tusculum was able to draw within one goal after putting two more on the board. Sunderland was able to get the Wolves some breathing room but Nate Raymond was able to keep the game within reach for the Pioneers. Dunklee was able to push the lead back to two goals making it 13-11 after three quarters.
 
The Wolves were able to pull away in the final frame with goals from Boone, Kearnan and Ross.
 
Messermsith had a game-high eight ground balls with Dunklee, Sunderland and Brice Kirsch adding three ground balls each. Kearnan and Dunklee was able to give the Wolves eatra opportunities on offense, causing two turnovers each.
 
Erick Szurley went the distance in net, making 17 saves on 30 shots faced.
 
The Wolves will be back in action next Saturday as they take on No. 18 Wingate at 4 p.m.
