HARTSVILLE - The Newberry women's tennis team cruised past Coker, 6-1 Tuesday afternoon at the Coker Tennis Courts.
The Wolves (11-5, 1-3 SAC) got off to a hot start, winning all three doubles matches. The team of
Elisa Aguirre and
Marta Gomar took care of Charlotte Clarke and Tammie Chew easily with a 6-1 win.
Lucy Spice and
Frederike Klein continued Newberry's hot start, picking up the 6-3 win over Zoe Heed and Kelli Stinchcomb.
Amy Griffiths and
Lucia Davila finished off the Wolves strong showing in doubles action, defeating Lea Weber and Kelli Hurt with a 6-2 win.
Aguirre got back on track in singles action, going to three sets with Clarke. Aguirre was in the hole early, falling to Clarke 6-4 in the first set. Aguirre was able to turn around the match, winning the second set 6-2 and the third set 6-3. Klein continues her strong play, defeating Chew in two sets. Klein won the first set with ease, 6-3, before getting pushed to the limits in the second set, 7-6.
Gomar picked up the win over Weber at the fourth singles spot, cruising in her two sets. The first set Gomar picked up a 6-2 win and then closed out the match 6-1. Griffiths had a tough first set against Stinchcomb but was able to get the 6-4 win. In the second set, Griffiths was able to get the 6-1 win. In the last singles match, Davila was able to take care of Hurt, winning the first set 6-2 and then not giving up a point in the second set, winning 6-0.
The Wolves will be back in action this Saturday as they continue their road trip as they travel to Tusculum for a 2 p.m. start.
