NEWBERRY – The Newberry women's tennis team fell to No. 19 Wingate on Wednesday afternoon at the Oakland Tennis Center.
Doubles
The Wolves nearly took the doubles point off of the Bulldogs as
Elisa Aguirre and
Lucia Davila picked up the win over Wingate's Camila Ciaccia and Sydney Homan, 6-3.
Frederike Klein and
Marta Gomar dropped their match to Michela Verpelli and Alisa Rudenko as the Wolves turned to
Lucy Spice and
Amy Griffiths to decide the match. Spice and Griffiths would take Claudia De Andreis and Chyi Lee to the brink as the duo eventually fell in a 7-5 decision to Wingate.
Singles
Wingate was able to sweep the singles matches behind strong play from their ace Verpelli who is ranked No. 14 in the country. Verpelli defeated Aguirre 6-3, 6-2 to take the first team point in singles. Spice nearly gave Newberry a win as she took Riann Hsu to a third set, where she ultimately fell 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. With the wins at singles, Wingate now has won 71 straight SAC matchups.
