NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves men's basketball team opened their home slate Friday night with a come from behind 73-64 victory over Piedmont International. The win pushes the Wolves to 2-1 on the young season.
The game started off slowly for Newberry as the visiting Bruins got out to a quick 5-0 lead. They extended the lead out to 13-6 before a layup by
TJ Brown and a putback by Angelo Sales, Jr. brought the Wolves within three, but Piedmont International extended the lead back out to nine points shortly thereafter.
Marcus Ford then came off the bench and gave Newberry a spark with five quick points, pulling the Wolves within one point at 23-22. After a made three pointer by Ford and a free throw by Sales, Jr. later in the half gave the Wolves their first lead of the game, Piedmont International scored the last five points of the half to take a 33-29 lead into the break.
At the half, the Wolves were shooting 46 percent from the field but just 18 percent from three point range and 50 percent from the free throw line. Ford and Sales, Jr. led the team as they combined for 15 points and seven rebounds, while
QuanDaveon McCollum chipped in six rebounds of his own.
The beginning of the second half saw the Wolves take a lead early on a
QuanDaveon McCollum layup and a
TJ Brown three pointer. After the Bruins took the lead back, the same sequence with McCollum and Brown occurred and Newberry had their largest lead of the contest up to that point. The Wolves continued to go on a run and took an eight point lead at 46-38 after Sales, Jr. scored three straight points courtesy of a fastbreak layup and a free throw.
McCollum made a layup around the 12 minute mark in the second half to give Newberry their first double digit lead of the game at 50-40, although the Bruins refused to quit. With under six minutes to play, a
Luke Gibson three pointer and a
Callan Low layup extended the lead out to 11 points. Piedmont International never got within closer than eight points for the rest of the game, and Newberry walked away with a nine point victory.
Sales, Jr. and McCollum both had monster games for the Wolves. Sales, Jr. had a team-leading 16 points and 13 rebounds, while McCollum had the first double-double of his career with 12 points and a team-leading 14 rebounds.
TJ Brown also scored in double figures for the Wolves with 15 points. Overall, the Wolves had an outstanding effort on the glass as they outrebounded the Bruins 49-21 and excelled defensively as Piedmont International shot under 39 percent from the field.
