NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves men's basketball team improved to 3-1 on the young season as they defeated Warren Wilson College 98-65 in Eleazer Arena Saturday afternoon. Newberry had an incredibly balanced attack as six players scored in double figures.
The Wolves started the game out on fire, going on a 10-0 run to take a double digit lead before the first media timeout. Four different players scored during that run. After the Owls scored twice to cut the lead to six points, Angelo Sales, Jr. scored on a layup and
Marshall Lange hit a three pointer to extend the lead back out to 11 points. Warren Wilson would only get within single digits once from then on, as the Wolves steadily pulled away. A
Callan Low three pointer extended the lead out to 20 points and the rout was on. The lead got out all the way to 39 points on a
Sikander Nielsen layup before a late bucket by the Owls cut the deficit to 37 at halftime.
The second half was more of the same early on as
Luke Gibson hit a three pointer to give the Wolves a 40 point lead. With 15 minutes left on the clock, coach
Jason Taylor decided to really delve into his bench for the first time all season, as
Tai Giger and
Kyle Tierney saw their first action of the regular season.
Donnie Haith also saw his first action of the season, although he had been inserted back in the first half and quickly contributed with three points and an assist in the last two minutes.
Once the reserves went in, Warren Wilson went on a run before Low made another layup to keep the lead at 39 points. After a few minutes, the starters came back in and almost immediately, Sales, Jr. made consecutive layups to regain the momentum. Later on in the half, with under three minutes remaining, Lange made consecutive fast break layups to push the lead to 46 points, and Newberry cruised to the finish.
TJ Brown led the Newberry offensive attack with 16 points and added six rebounds. Lange had 14 points,
Marcus Ford had 13 points for the first double figure scoring game of his Newberry career, and
QuanDaveon McCollum had a second straight double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Callan Low had 11 points for his first career double figure performance, and
Luke Gibson added ten points in an efficient outing.
The Wolves begin conference play on the road next week against Catawba on Tuesday.
