NEWBERRY - The Newberry men's soccer secures a 2-0 victory tonight against Shaw at Smith Road Complex.
The Wolves wanted to start the match by show their offensive power by attacking early on. The first eight minutes consist of Newberry controlling the ball in Shaw's territory and taking multiple shots. The Wolves moved the ball around well to created three great scoring opportunities, two of which saved and the other blocked. The next 24 minutes of play saw both sides trading possessions with neither able to get a shot off.
In the 32nd minute of play Newberry broke the nil nil score. Sophomore
Ibrahim Nadir was able to find the back of the net to put the Wolves on the board. Nadir settled a pass near the top of the box before moving to his right. Nadir then took three touches toward the net and took a shot at the top of box. The shot went in toward the far post as Nadir was being pulled down by a Bears defender.
In the second half, Newberry looked to struggle a little against Shaw. The Bears had the early control and possession in the Wolves territory. Even with the control Shaw was not able to generate many shots as they would give up the ball at the wrong times to allow Newberry to clear.
Eventually the Wolves were able to get their offense going again after having a difficult time to start the second half. It payed off in the 80th minute as fellow sophomore
Troy Paul found the back of the net. Nadir received a through pass and out ran the defenders as he dribbled to the net. Shaw's keeper try to step up to challenge the potential shot. As he stepped up, Nadir made a beautiful pass to Paul for the one touch goal to put the Wolves up 2-0.
The score would stand that way to the final whistle as Newberry maintained possession of the ball in the final ten minutes of play.
With tonights win, Newberry ties the program record for wins in a season with nine. This is the fifth time in history they have accomplished this feat. The other times came in 2001, 2003, 2004, and 2007.
The Wolves will be home this Saturday as they host Queens on Senior Night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
