NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves men's soccer team looked to set a school record for both total and conference wins, but was unable to do so as they fell to Queens 4-1 Saturday night at Smith Road Complex.
The match got off to an ominous start for the Wolves as the Royals scored just five minutes into the match. David Alvarez shot from 25 yards out and the ball went right at
Leroy Zeller, but the ball went off Zeller's glove and into the back of the net. This gave Queens the early momentum and a 1-0 lead.
Newberry would respond quickly, however, as
Noah Vezzu passed to
Eric Brody who slotted it home from five yards outside the box to tie the match. Although it was his third goal of the season, this was the first that was not directly off a penalty kick. With the goals, the Wolves looked to seize the momentum as the match was not yet 12 minutes old.
Queens was able to re-take their lead just under seven minutes later. The Royals had the ball and dribbled the ball down the right side of the pitch. They got to about three yards out before the ball was crossed from right to left. A Royals player came in for the shot to drive the ball in on the left side of the net. This gave Queens a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.Â
After the break, the Royals kept their offensive presence going by scoring two more goals in the 57th and 85th minutes. The Wolves had plenty of chances throughout the match to score and keep this match close. Unfortunately none of their shots were able to find the back of the net.Â
The Wolves have secured a spot into the conference playoffs and now await to see where they will place in the final standings. Â
