CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Newberry Wolves men's soccer team fall to Queens 4-2 in the conference tournament Saturday evening.
It did not take long for the Royals to find the back of the net. Four minutes into the match, Keegan Burton's shot gave the Royals the early 1-0 lead. They would score one more goal before the half. A foul in the box gave Queens a penalty kick in the 38th minute. Queen's Michael Hornsby kicked it past Newberry's keeper to make the score 2-0.
Even after the Royals scored another goal to make it 3-0, that did not stop the Wolves offense. Newberry got on the board in the 55th minute to end the shutout. Sophomore
Ibrahim Nadir was dribbling down the sideline before crossing the ball into the box. Where teammate
Troy Paul came in and headed the ball past the Queens keeper to cut the lead down to 3-1.
Queens secured their victory by adding a final goal in the 59th minute to extend their lead 4-1. Newberry scored the final goal of the match 36 seconds later. Once again it was Paul who scored to make it 4-2.
After the match head coach
Bryce Cooper had this to say about his team and season. "It's hard to play a team twice in a season, especially a week apart. Credit to Queens for their execution and quality on the night. We unfortunately gave up a few soft goals in untimely moments that made it difficult. That being said I was so proud of our response to going down and our effort and intensity in the second half. It was a very good season overall and we have a lot to be proud of and build on. Thank you to everyone that supported us this year; it was a season to remember."
This concludes the 2019 season as the team finishes the year at 9-8 as they head into the offseason.
