JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. - Coming off of a big road win at Lincoln Memorial Friday evening, the Newberry Wolves looked to sweep their Tennessee road trip as they faced Carson-Newman Saturday afternoon. However, the Lady Eagles got off to a quick start and swept the Wolves 3-0. With the loss, Newberry falls to 5-16 (3-13 SAC) on the season.
The Wolves got off to a poor start as Carson-Newman won the first three points of the match. Newberry would stay close, however, and split the next 14 points with the Lady Eagles to trail 10-7. Carson-Newman then went on a seven point run to take a ten point lead, effectively putting the first set away. Trailing 21-10, the Wolves went on a quick 4-0 spurt, but that was matched by the Lady Eagles as they went on to take the set 25-14 and take the early 1-0 lead.
Newberry got off to a much better start in the critical second set, winning seven of the first ten points to take an early 7-3 lead. Carson-Newman came storming back and won seven of the next nine points to take a 10-9 lead. With the set tied at 14, the Lady Eagles again went on a huge run as they won six straight points to take a 20-14 lead. Although the Wolves would win six of the next points to close within 24-20, Carson-Newman hammered down a kill to win 25-20 and take a commanding 2-0 lead.
The Wolves got off to a great start once again in the third set as they won seven of ten points to take a 7-3 lead. The Lady Eagles battled back to tie the match at nine, and soon took control of the set. With the set tied at 12, Carson-Newman won five straight points and then steadily pulled away for the rest of the set, eventually wining 25-17 to complete the sweep.
Match standouts for Newberry included setters
Taylor Garrison and
Olivia Kozemko. Garrison led the team with 12 digs and posted seven assists, while Kozemko had eight assists and nine digs. At the net,
Toni-Anne Whitlow had five kills and
Sidra Triplett led the charge defensively with three blocks.
The Wolves will look to bounce back next weekend as they will return home to face Coker on November 1st.
