NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves volleyball team garnered their fourth conference win of the season Friday evening in Eleazer Arena as they defeated Coker in three sets, their second conference sweep of the season.
The match got off to a great start as Newberry jumped all over the Cobras. The Wolves had an early 6-1 lead and continued to cruise during the set. With the lead at 8-4, Newberry won six straight points with
Olivia Kozemko at the service line.
Toni-Anne Whitlow was involved in the final three points of that run as she was in on a block assist and hammered down two kills. Whitlow led the Wolves with 13 kills on the evening.
As the set continued, Newberry stretched their lead out to 20-6. After Coker closed to within 21-10, the Wolves won the last four points to win the set 25-10 as Whitlow hammered down yet another kill. This gave the Wolves the crucial 1-0 advantage that they would use to propel them throughout the match.
The second set saw the Cobras battle hard as they looked to get back in the match. Coker took an 11-9 lead a little less than halfway in the first set and extended the lead out to 17-14 later on. Newberry would battle back hard, winning six straight points to take a 20-17 lead as
Zoe Dinkins hammered down one of her ten kills on the evening. The Wolves then won five of the next ten points to win 25-22 and take a commanding 2-0 lead.
Newberry got out to another quick start in the third set as they took a 6-3 lead. The Wolves quickly extended that lead out to 11-5 on a kill by Kozemko, who led the team with 16 assists on the evening. Newberry would take a 20-14 lead, but Coker came storming back and put the outcome in doubt as they had a 24-23 lead late in the set. The Wolves would close out the match, however, as they recorded blocks by
Sidra Triplett and Whitlow to close out the match and win 3-0.
The Wolves exploded offensively in this performance as they recorded a hitting percentage of .364, the second highest in program history. Defensively,
Sydney Diaz has an excellent evening as she recorded 12 digs to lead the team.
Sidra Triplett and
Toni-Anne Whitlow were forces at the net as they combined for seven blocks.
Newberry will look to continue the positive momentum as they host conference-leading Wingate tomorrow at 2 pm.
