Wolves overwhelm the Valkyries

Freshman score three of four goals

NEWBERRY - The Newberry women's soccer team out played Converse to a 4-0 victory Wednesday night at Smith Road Complex.

Newberry quickly got their offense going as they scored two goals in the first two minutes. The first came in the 4th minute when senior Daphne Heyaime gave the Wolves the 1-0 lead. Freshman Vanessa Baird took a shot that went off the crossbar and came back into the field of play. The Santo Domingo native took advantage of this and kicked the ball past the keeper.

The second came almost four minutes later when Baird this time was able to found the back of the net. The Corona, Calif. native took the shot from 22 yards out after receiving the pass from Heyaime. Her shot went in toward the near side post for the 2-0 lead.

In the 40th minute, Newberry scored one more goal right before halftime. Freshman Catherine McKeown scored her first career goal to put the Wolves up 3-0. Senior Taylor Hiatt challenged the keeper, forcing the keeper to come out from net, before passing off to McKeown for the wide open shot.

The final goal of the match was scored in the 86th minute. Freshman Taylor Monahan was the one to find the back of the net for her first career goal. Monahan got the ball from 30 yards out and dribbled up the field to the net. While being contested, Converse goalkeeper came out of the goal again to stop the attack. The keeper attempted to stop the ball but it deflected off her gloves, and Monahan capitalize on this by rescuring the ball and shooting into a wide open net.

Newberry out shot Converse by a total of 28 to three, with 14 of the Wolves shots being on frame.

The Wolves will be on the road this Saturday as they play Lincoln Memorial at 1:00 p.m.
