BARBOURVILLE, KY. - The Newberry women's soccer drop a close 3-2 match in overtime to Lincoln Memorial on Sunday afternoon.
Lincoln Memorial scored the golden goal in the 98th minute to give them the victory over the Wolves. Itzel Ballesteros was the Lady Railsplitter that secured the win, after beating Newberry's keeper to the right. Ballesteros took her shot after getting a cross pass from Thernia Zervas.
The Lady Railsplitters got on the board first in the 9th minute. Lincoln Memorial was on a corner attepmt where Zervas was taking the attempt. The ball was crossed from the left to the right side, where Zervas's teammate was waiting. A header by Jessica Cravero gave the Lady Railsplitters they early 1-0 advantage. The same duo struck again in the first half at the 21st minute. Once again Zervas crossed from the left side to Cravero before the ball found the back of the net and give Lincoln Memorial a 2-0 lead.
The Wolves found themselves down 2-0 heading into the half. That did not stop them from coming out to change the momemtum on the pitch.
Newberry scored their first goal of the day in the 74th minute. A shot from freshman
Vanessa Baird at the top of the box help cut the defict in half. The midfielder received a pass from
Jacqueline Aldrete before punching it into the upper right corner.
A little over five minutes later the Wolves got the equalizer. Freshman
Catherine McKeown scored from 20 yards out on a shot that just went over the keepers hand. Again Aldrete assisted on the play.
This makes it back to back matches that both of these freshman have scored a goal for the Wolves.
In overtime, Newberry was unable to generate any shots before Lincoln Memorial put an end to the match.
The Wolves will return home to take on Shaw on Wednesday evening at 5:00 p.m.
