BELMONT, N.C. – The Newberry Wolves kicked off the 2019 portion of their season with a 37-9 road win against Belmont Abbey to open up conference action.
Austin Neal (125) started to Wolves off in dominating fashion, defeating Aaron Zebrauskas in a 16-0 tech. fall.
Trevor Mansfield (133) pick up a win via forfeit while
Zack Clary (141) gave Newberry a strong cushion with a 5-2 decision win coming against Travis Allen.
David Giantono (149) fell to John Gahagan to put Belmont Abbey on the board.
Nick Giantono (165) got Newberry back in the win column with a fall over Jordan Eakin, needing 1:01 to do so.
Joey Rocca (174) and
ZeBrandon Gant (184) picked up huge wins as well, both by major decision. Rocca won by a 12-0 major decision against Andrew Pegram while Gant had a 17-7 major decision against Dawson Satterfield.
Tyler Maclaine got Belmont Abbey's other win of the night, coming against
Dylan Eaton (197) by a 5-3 decision.
Patton Gossett (285) rounded out the night with a 5-1 decision against Mike Siwiec.
The Wolves will be back in action this Saturday, Jan. 12th, as they head the Hartsville for the Coker College Duals. The Wolves will begin their day against Ohio Valley at 8 a.m. followed by Mercyhurst at 10 a.m., Bluefield at 12 p.m. and Truett-McConnell at 3:15 p.m.
