Wolves unable to overcome slow start in loss to Lincoln Memorial

HARROGATE, TENN. – The Newberry Wolves (4-6, 1-3 SAC) got out to a slow start in their first game of the New Year and were unable to recover, falling to the defending conference champion Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters (10-3, 5-1 SAC) by a score of 115-84 on the road.

The Railsplitters were all business from the opening tip, scoring their first bucket 12 seconds in to establish a lead that they would never relinquish. LMU jumped out an 11-0 lead to open the game, prompting a Newberry timeout before the Wolves would get on the board.

The first half was especially tough sledding for the Wolves, who shot just under 26 percent from the floor, allowing the Railsplitters to build a 58-34 halftime lead.

After the break, the Wolves overcame their slow start and competed well, scoring a hefty 50 points in the second frame, but LMU was still able to extend its lead to the 115-84 final score.

LMU's stars came to play, with four players scoring in double-digits as well as three of those players surpassing the 20-point mark. The Railsplitters were led by a stellar day from Alex Dahling, who was a scalding 8-11 from beyond the arc, allowing him to finish with 24 points. The Railsplitters also finished with 31 assists on the day, just three short of the SAC record for most assists in a single game.

Newberry had four players in double-digits as well, led by freshman Omari Wilson's career-high 19 points and senior Jamaal Satisfield's season-high 13 points.

Additionally, freshman Josiah Coatie had a solid showing in his first game of his collegiate career, tallying six points, three rebounds and a team-high five assists on the afternoon.

The Wolves will hit the road again on Monday, January 7 to take on Piedmont International in a nonconference matchup. That game will tipoff at 2:00 pm after being rescheduled from its original start time of 7:00 pm.
