Wolves get back into win column with victory over Bruins

Sales Jr. leads the way with 16 points

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Newberry Wolves (5-6) were able to climb back into the win column, defeating the Piedmont International University Bruins (5-10) by a margin of 90-72 on the road.

After just under four minutes, it appeared that the game would prove to be an even affair, with both sides tied at 10 points apiece.

That's when Josiah Coatie and the Wolves were able to find their footing on the offensive end.

Coatie hit three consecutive three-pointers to help spark a 15-0 scoring run over less than three minutes to give Newberry the lead for good. Coatie would finish with 11 points on the night, the first double-digit outing of his collegiate career.

Following the quick run from the Wolves, the Bruins were able to maintain the deficit, even chipping away to make it as close as seven points with just under four minutes remaining in the first half.

The focal point of the afternoon for the Bruins was the one-two punch of Tamir Glenn and China Jones, who combined to score 36 points, half of the team's scoring output on the day. Jones was especially impressive, shooting 7-11 from the floor and grabbing six boards, but Angelo Sales Jr. proved to be the answer for the Wolves.

Sales Jr. led the way for Newberry, with 16 points and six rebounds, as well as snatching two steals. He was one of four Wolves with double-digit scoring outings with Marshall Lange (13p), TJ Brown (12p) and the aforementioned Coatie.

Brown, a freshman, had a particularly efficient game, scoring his 12 points on 5-8 from the floor while also pulling down a team-high eight boards.

The second half was far from easy for the Wolves, however, as the Bruins came out firing to cut the 12-point halftime deficit to six, but Newberry caught a break when PIU head coach Josh Howard, a former NBA All-Star, was called for a technical foul while arguing a foul call.

It was as close as the Bruins would get, as the Wolves used a strong defensive effort to force 14 turnovers and hold their opponents to 32 second half points, securing a 90-72 victory on the road, their fifth win of the young season.

The Wolves dominance on the boards was a major factor in their victory, as they outrebounded the Bruins by a margin of 43-31.

The win moves Newberry to 5-6 on the year as they prepare for a major conference matchup with Queens, a team that made a final four appearance a season ago. That game will tipoff at 8:00 pm on Wednesday, January 9 at Eleazer Arena.
