Newberry overwhelms Mars Hill in fourth quarter for 80-67 victory

The Wolves held the Lions without a field goal for the first nine minutes of the fourth quarter

Box Score  MARS HILL, N.C. – The Newberry women's basketball team defeated Mars Hill by a final score of 80-67 on Saturday afternoon at Stanford Arena. With the win, the Wolves move to 12-6 (6-5 SAC) on the year while the Lions drop to 1-14 (0-11 SAC).

Led by 22 points from senior Regan McCarty, three other Wolves scored 10+ points in the victory. McCarty made 6-of-8 of her shots from behind the arc while teammates Shelby Britten (20 points and seven assists), Kelsey McDermott (15 points) and Meg Essex (12 points and 8 rebounds), also had strong offensive performances.

The Wolves opened the game with a wide open lay-up from McCarty after some terrific ball movement around the court. Ke'Shaun White, in her first start of the season, stole the ball from the Lions on the following possession and kicked it to Britten for a 3-pointer.

McCarty, McDermott and Britten all hit 3-pointers to give Newberry a 16-8 advantage midway through the first quarter. The Lions responded with an 11-2 run to close out the quarter to take a 19-18 lead. Mars Hill took advantage of the Wolves poor outside shooting in the second quarter to take a nine-point advantage into halftime and through the third quarter.

Facing a large deficit as they entered the final quarter of play, the Wolves would respond with some of their best play of the season. The trio of McDermott, McCarty and Britten cured Newberry's shooting woes from the previous quarters after hitting 3-pointers to erase the Lions lead and tie the game.

From there, Newberry's stout defense and press forced several Mars Hill turnovers leading to the Wolves surmounting an overwhelming lead for Mars Hill as the Lions were held without a field goal until 55 second remained in the game.

POSTGAME NOTES:
  • Newberry recorded a season-high 34 points in the fourth quarter
  • McCarty recorded a career-high six 3-pointers in addition to hitting her 50th career 3-pointer in the win
  • McDermott collected her 50th career steal
UP NEXT: Newberry will travel to play Catawba next Wednesday, January 30th at 6 PM. The Wolves previously defeated the Catawba Indians at home, 63-53.
