Wolves three-point barrage notches victory over Mars Hill

Sales Jr. puts up 23 points and 11 rebounds in win

MARS HILL, N.C. – Behind a strong double-double performance from Angelo Sales Jr., the Newberry Wolves (7-11, 3-8 SAC) were able to defeat the Mars Hill Lions (7-11, 3-8 SAC) by a score of 100-91.

This was the second meeting of the season between these two teams, with the Wolves having emerged victorious by a margin of 92-83 back in early December.

Sales Jr. got involved early and often, ending the first half with 14 points on 5-6 shooting, including 3-3 from beyond the arc to lead both sides. When both teams headed into the locker rooms for the halftime break, Sales Jr. was the only player in double-digits.

Newberry received solid first-half contributions from Marshall Lange, Luke Gibson and Tai Giger as well, with each scoring six points to help the Wolves to a 44-39 lead.

Mars Hill's Ja'Shawn Brooks, who lit up the Wolves for 32 points on 7-10 from deep in their first meeting, was held to just seven points in the opening frame to lead the way for the Lions.

The Lions were able to keep the game close in the second half, but the Wolves managed to maintain their lead throughout the final 20 minutes.

Sales Jr. continued to shine in the second half, finishing the game with a team-high 23 points on 9-13 from the field as well as pulling down a team-high 11 rebounds.

Giger, who tied his career-high in points with 23 against Coker on Wednesday, was a stellar 5-7 from long range tonight to notch 15 points, further cementing his status as one of the top three-point shooters on the team.

Gibson went 5-8 from the floor and 5-6 from the charity stripe to finish with 18 points, and Lange rounded out Newberry's double-digit scorers with 10 points, moving him to within 13 of the 1000 career point mark.

As a team, the Wolves hit on 18 three-point shots in the game, making it 40 total three-point bombs over the last two games alone and driving them to a 106.5ppg average and 2-0 record over that span.

The Wolves were also able to outrebound a taller Mars Hill team, outmuscling the Lions by a margin of 43-32.

Newberry will attempt to push their win streak to three in a row when they travel to Salisbury, N.C. to take on the surging Catawba Indians at 8:00 pm on Wednesday, January 30. In their first meeting, the Indians handled the Wolves 98-74 at Eleazer Arena.
