SALISBURY, N.C. – The Newberry Wolves (7-12, 3-9 SAC) were unable to overcome a strong Catawba Indians (15-5, 8-4 SAC) team, falling on the road by a score of 100-85.
Unable to recapture their exceptional three-point shooting from their two previous games, the Wolves struggled to match the offensive firepower of the Indians, falling into a 55-42 hole at the halftime break.
The second half proved more successful for the Wolves, who managed to keep pace with Catawba, but ultimately failed to ever truly get within striking distance.
The Wolves offense was led by
Marshall Lange and
Angelo Sales Jr., each contributing a solid 17 points on the evening. Lange, a junior who entered the game with 987 career points, was able to surpass the 1000-point mark, the highest total of any player on the active roster.
Tai Giger and
Luke Gibson also finished in double-digits for the Wolves with 14 points and 12 points respectively; however, it was Catawba's Marcell Haskett who stole the show.
Haskett finished the night with a game-high 35 points on 14-22 shooting, including a game-high six three-pointers. Daquan Lilly also shined for the Indians, recording a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The Indians were able to outshoot the Wolves by a wide margin, connecting on 52.8 percent of their attempts compared to Newberry's 42.4 percent mark, allowing the Indians to lead from wire to wire in the victory.
The Wolves will return home for a matchup with the Tusculum Pioneers at Eleazer Arena on Saturday, February 2 at 4:00 pm. In their previous matchup, the Pioneers were able to escape with a 91-81 overtime victory over the Wolves.
