WINGATE, N.C. – The No. 25 ranked Newberry women's basketball team (11-3, 5-2 SAC) fell to Wingate (11-4, 6-2) by a final score of 67-46 on Wednesday evening at Cuddy Arena.
The Wolves jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead to start the game on a
Meg Essex lay-up and a 3-pointer from
Shelby Britten. The Bulldogs instantly responded with a 13-0 run, forcing six Wolves turnovers in the process.
Newberry was forced to be without its top scoring option for the remainder of the first half after Britten picked up her second foul with 3:15 remaining in the first quarter. The Bulldogs took advantage and surmounted a 17-point advantage heading into the halftime.
Essex began the third quarter with a lay-up and converted a free throw for a three-point play, but the Bulldogs continued to score ultimately leading to Newberry's third loss of the season.
Essex posted a 14 point and 12 rebound double-double performance.
Madison Golden came off the bench and recorded a career-high eight points. Britten's six-game streak of recording double-digit points was snapped as the senior was held to only seven points.

- Newberry fell on the road for the first time this season
- Essex recorded her sixth double-double of the season
- Britten has made two or more 3-pointers and shot 40% or better from behind the arc in the past six games
