Wolves cruise past Mount Olive

Newberry goes 2-1 at the Francis Marion Invitational

FLORENCE, S.C. – Newberry ended the Francis Marion Invitational on a positive note as the handled business against Mount Olive. The Wolves (5-3, 0-1 SAC) swept the Trojan's going, posting sets of 25-12, 25-17 and 25-13.
 
The Wolves were paced by Toni Anne-Whitlow, finishing with a match-high 11 kills. Angela Gore added nine kills while Vanessa Blas chipped in with eight kills. Zoe Dinkins posted .545 hitting percentage off seven kills to one error. Newberry posted a hitting percentage of .308 to Mount Olive's .012.
 
"This was a good weekend for us," said Head Coach Ross Kessler. "We got to see the results of what we've been working towards in practice for the last three weeks.
 
Newberry controlled the first set early, going on an 8-0 run, fueled by three kills from Dinkins and two kills from Gore. The Trojan's were able to stop the run as they posted two straight points before the Wolves closed out the set on a 6-2 run. This was a common theme throughout the match as Newberry only trailed once as they were locked in, determined for the win.
 
Olivia Kozemko continues her strong freshman campaign, finishing with 23 assists while Taylor Garrison added 13 assists.
 
Kensley Jordan was instrumental on the defensive end once again, posting a match-high nine digs while Blas added seven digs. The Wolves front line was solid once again on defense as the team finished with eight blocks.
 
The Wolves dominated in every aspect of the match, having the advantage in kills, aces, blocks, assists and digs.
 
Kessler adds, "We're not where we want to be, but we are absolutely heading into the right direction. We'll enjoy the wins today, and tomorrow we'll get right back to work, improving our game, preparing for conference play and getting ready for our home-opener on Friday."
 
Newberry looks to take their momentum into conference play as they take on Mars Hill next Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. and returning home for their home-opener on Friday, Sept. 14, as they take on Carson-Newman at 7 p.m.
