NEWBERRY – For the forth time in a row, the Wolves were pushed to the limit, this time falling to Carson-Newman in five sets Monday evening at Eleazer Arena.
Newberry (6-7, 1-5 SAC) posted sets of 26-24, 25-20, 27-25, 30-28 and 13-15. The Wolves got the momentum in the first set, scoring six straight points towards the end to make it 24-22 in favor of the Wolves with
Sidra Triplett getting two of her 11 kills in the span. The Eagles would score the next two points to tie it up before
Lacie Wood had a kill for the 25th point and error from Erin Edwards to win it for Newberry.
The Wolves would find themselves down 2-1 in the match. With this being familiar territory for Newberry, they keep their composure and came away with the set victory. With Newberry trailing 18-12, a service error by the Eagle gave them life. Carson-Newman scored quickly again with a kill from Joy Rhodes. To help swing the momentum, Newberry went on a 4-1 run with kills from
Vanessa Blas,
Angela Gore, Triplett and a block from
Zoe Dinkins and
Lacie Wood.
Neither team gained much ground until a kill from
Toni-Anne Whitlow, and error from the Eagles and a block from Triplett and
Olivia Kozemko would seal up a wild forth frame.
Kozemko and
Taylor Garrison paced the Wolves, both posting a double-double. Kozemko had 28 assists and 19 digs while Garrison had 20 assists and 12 digs. Whitlow paced the offense, finishing with a team-high 14 kills. Wood had a coming out match, getting 10 kills and four block assists.
Kensley Jordan led the way on the defensive side of the court, posting a new career-high 39 digs. Dinkins also had a stellar day on defense, finishing with nine total blocks (two solo, seven assists).
There were 50 ties and 27 lead changes throughout the match. The Wolves continued to show why the are atop the league in blocks with 14 to Carson-Newman's 10.
The Wolves hit the road this Friday to take on Coker at 7 p.m. before taking on Wingate on Saturday at 2 p.m.
