Wolves sweep the Cobras on the road

Newberry captures second win in three matches

HARTSVILLE – Newberry was able to find their groove on the road in a pivotal match at the halfway point of the season, sweeping host Coker in three sets Friday evening.

The Wolves (7-7, 2-5 SAC) posted set scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-15. The Wolves were paced by Toni-Anne Whitlow with 11 kills on 26 attempts and finishing with .346 hitting percentage. Zoe Dinkins played a key roll in limiting the Cobras offensive attack with eight block assists. The team finished with a total of 12 blocks.

"Tonight was the first time we got to see everything come together," said Head Coach Ross Kessler. "There were some errors in some areas but overall, we played well. Nice to get a road win and to see the fruits of our labor over these past few weeks."

In the first frame, neither team were able to gain much ground on one another as Coker was out in front, having an 8-7 advantage. That changed when Newberry were able to get the next four point off two kills from Vanessa Blas and two attack errors by the Cobras. That was the start of a 9-1 run, setting the tone for the rest of the match.

Newberry looked for the clean sweep in the third frame but found themselves behind early to Coker, 8-5. Lacie Wood sparked a 9-0 run with one of her six kills to give the Wolves a commanding 14-8 lead. During the run, Wood was able to get two more kills.

Wood also was effective on the defensive side of the court with five block assists. Kensley Jordan continued her stellar play, coming away with 17 digs.

Olivia Kozemko had the lone double-double for the Wolves, finishing with 17 assists and 10 digs. Taylor Garrison chipped in with 15 assists.

Newberry held the advantage in hitting percentage, hitting .276 compared to Coker's .050. Coker finished with 25 errors while Newberry only had nine.

"We'll enjoy the win tonight and the focus back in for Wingate tomorrow," continued Kessler.

The Wolves have a quick turnaround as they travel to take on Wingate tomorrow at 12 p.m.
