LOUISVILLE, KY – Newberry (3-2) traveled to play non-conference opponent Bellarmine (5-2), securing a 3-2 win over the Knights. It was the first win over the Bellarmine Knights in Newberry program history.
"We were looking to bounce back from our last game and we had time to fix the things we needed to fix," said head coach Hannah Dave. "Today was a total team effort and we came out to fight from the very beginning."
Mariah Lee,
Victoria Corriston, and
Kristyna Oyola accounted for the three Newberry goals with one each. The Wolves concluded the game with 16 shots, eight of which were on target.
Bellarmine also managed to put up 16 shots, 10 of which were on goal, but Newberry goalkeeper
Allison Davis proved the difference, with seven saves compared to Bellarmine's four.
Newberry came out of the gate flying, getting on the board just five minutes into the game when
Mariah Lee slotted in a goal off of a corner from
Megan Eisenhardt.
Bellarmine's Alex Hill scored in the 23rd minute, tying the game at 1-1, but less than a minute later the Wolves would respond with a cross from
Brady Keeler that was converted by
Victoria Corriston.
The Wolves maintained their 2-1 lead into the halftime break. In the 53rd minute,
Kristyna Oyola scored off of a rebound to build a 3-1 Newberry lead that the Knights would never surmount.
The Knights did, however, manage to tack on a goal in the 58th minute to keep the game interesting, but Davis and the Wolves were able to withstand four Bellarmine shot attempts to claim the victory.
Newberry will continue their road trip and travel to Saint Charles, Missouri, to play nonconference opponent Lindenwood at 12 pm on Sunday, September 23.
