Newberry concedes to Hawks in tight matchup

Dillon finds back of the net season-high six times in 12-11 loss

NEWBERRY – The Wolves were unable to overcome a one-point deficit in the final minute to fall to Chowan 12-11 on Tuesday afternoon.

Newberry fought their way back from a three-goal deficit in the second half with Monique Proctor and Rachel Dillon finding the back of the net to close the gap 9-8 with 20 minutes remaining in the half. Chowan would extend the lead back to two before Alexis Kahler cut it back to one.

Both teams exchanged goals with Dillon notching her sixth of the game, marking a season-high. The Hawks held a 12-10 edge in the final two minutes, but Kahler scored at the one-minute mark to put Newberry just shy of the comeback.

Chowan nabbed the draw control and ran out the clock to win the head-to-head battle.

Each team had 32 shots in the contests but it would be the Hawks that would hold the slight advantage in shots on frame 21-18.

The Hawks scored in the first five minutes to take the early 1-0 lead. Dillon took advantage on a free position attempt to knot it up 1-1 before Chowan had a pair of unanswered goals to take a 3-1 edge. Helen Kuhn and Dillon closed it to one, 4-3. Dillon would tack on another goal to make it 7-4 going into intermission.

Goalkeeper Brandy Bowman held the edge in saves with nine on the afternoon.

With their nonconference schedule complete, Newberry will face Wingate on Saturday, April 7 at 1:00 p.m.
