Freshman Kevin Clanton’s day not enough for Wolves in loss to Anderson

Clanton hits his first home run of the season

ANDERSON – The Wolves couldn't rally behind the freshman phenom falling to Trojans of Anderson in a back-and-forth contest 12-8 on Friday night.

Kevin Clanton had himself a night despite the loss hitting a home run to left field to score not only himself but two others in Colin Allman and Derek Olenchuck in top of the fourth for Newberry's first trio of runs.

Dalton Lansdowne's proceeding single to right field would advance Tyler White to third base and score Tommy Passerello. The two found their way one base thanks to a double down the left field line and a walk.

On the second to last out of the inning, Danton Hyman hit a sacrifice fly to the center fielder to score White and propel Lansdowne to third. However, the inning would end on a strike out swinging before bringing Lansdowne home.

Anderson's early lead would be shaved to 6-5 heading into the bottom of the fourth thanks to the offensive explosion led by Clanton.

The Trojans were able to take the premature lead in the opening innings on a ground out, home run down the right field line, triple down the right field line, and a double down the left field line.

The Wolves defense, who would now be spearheaded by Hunter Hill, kept the Trojans scoreless for two consecutive half innings by making them put the ball into play on a series of fly outs, a pop up and a ground out.

Anderson's addition of four runs in the fifth opened the game back up to a hefty Trojan lead at 10-5. A home run started off this half inning and the Trojans were able to sink two more a couple of pitches later to the opposite side of the field. Through several pitchers Newberry's Austin Walker was finally able to put a cap on Anderson's scoring with a ground out directly at his feet.

Down but still in the game, the Wolves turned the heat back up on the Trojans with three runs of their own coming in the seventh. Ben Herring found himself on base courtesy of a walk by Anderson's pitcher. Olenchuck reached on a fielding error by the second baseman which moved Herring over a base.

Allman's single to center field got the bases loaded and Newberry's confidence back for Clanton who singled through the right side to score Olenchuck and Herring.

Allman would later score on a wild pitch to close the gap once more on Anderson, 10-8.

The Trojans had an immediate response of two runs which sealed the victory as both teams would go scoreless to finish the game. Anderson tallied 14 hits on the night as Newberry stayed closely behind at 10.

The Wolves attempted a rally through seven different pitchers but could not sustain with Hill making the longest appearance of any Newberry pitcher in the mound.

The doubleheader against Anderson will take place tomorrow Saturday, April 21 with first pitch coming approximately at 1:00 p.m. to conclude the 2018 regular season.
