Newberry trounces Bears

Martinez clinched the 6-3 win in singles action

HICKORY, N.C. – The Wolves won four out of six singles matches to nab the 6-3 victory against Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday afternoon.

After a 2-1 Wolves' advantage in doubles Amanda Carrillo began the first flight with a 6-1, 6-3 decision followed by a 6-4, 6-2 win from No. 2 Elisa Aguirre. Lenoir-Rhyne struck back with a pair of singles points to make it a tight 4-3 contest. The comeback was short-lived with No. 5 Rebecca Martinez sealing the conference win in a two-set 6-3, 6-3 thriller.

Carrillo and Marta Gomar powered Newberry to their first victory of the day in an 8-2 decision. The Bears grabbed the next point, but Newberry capped off doubles action with Aguirre and Lucia Davila earning an 8-5 win in the second flight.

With the road trek completed, Newberry returns home to face Lincoln Memorial on Friday, March 30 at the Oakland Tennis Center.
