TIGERVILLE – Shelby Britten drained a free throw with .03 seconds remaining to give the Wolves a 67-66 victory over the North Greenville Crusaders in the final non-conference game of the season.
The Wolves held a five-point advantage after the first quarter.
Meg Essex then put up 12 of her 21 points in the second quarter to lengthen the Wolves lead, 39-25, at the half.
Newberry led by double-digits heading into the final quarter before the Crusaders attempted a strong comeback. North Greenville tied the game at 62 following the final media timeout until moments later when Essex scored a lay-up of her own to give the Wolves the advantage.
The Wolves would not score another field goal for the remainder of the game, instead making three clutch free throws and playing stout defense in the final minutes of the game for the victory.
Regan McCarty and
Brandi Hall were dominant forces on the boards as McCarty grabbed 10 boards and Hall snagged seven off the bench.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- The Wolves conclude the non-conference portion of the regular season with a 6-1 record
- This is the third straight game decided by two points or less
- Today marks the second game this season where two Wolves scored 20 or more points (11/24/18 at Lees-McRae)
