Undefeated Wolves take on King tomorrow afternoon

Fans can earn free admission to the game by donating a new, unwrapped toy to Toys for Tots

NEWBERRY – The No. 3 Southeast region ranked and undefeated Newberry women's basketball team (8-0) is set to take on the King Tornado (3-4) tomorrow. Tip-off from Eleazer Arena is set for 2 pm.

The team will be hosting a toy drive to benefit Toys for Tots before the game. Fans who bring any new, unwrapped toy on Saturday will be granted free admission into the game. Donations are also welcome with all proceeds benefiting Toys for Tots.

Fans are also encouraged to wear their favorite holiday outfit as this is the last home game until the beginning of January.

SCOUTING THE TORNADO (3-4)
  • King was voted to finish third in the Conference Carolina's Women's Basketball Preseason Poll
  • The Tornado are 1-3 against South Atlantic Conference this season with a win against Coker and losses to Tusculum, Lincoln Memorial and Carson-Newman
  • 6-4 center and East Carolina transfer Kori West leads the Tornado in both scoring (15.3 ppg) and rebounding (12.1 rpg)
  • Rank 25th nationally in defensive rebounds per game (30.0)
  • 82nd nationally in 3-pointers per game (7.0)
LAST TIME OUT
  • Newberry defeated the No. 6 ranked team in the South region, Benedict, at the buzzer on a banked in 3-pointer from Shelby Britten. The 5-4 senior had 21 points in the game with five 3-pointers. Brandi Hall provided a spark off the bench recording a career-best 12 points.
  • King hosted South Atlantic Conference preseason favorites Carson-Newman, falling 71-65 on Wednesday evening. West posted a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.
A RECORD START
  • The Newberry women's basketball team are off to the best start in program history (8-0) and are the lone NCAA Division I, II, or III team still undefeated in South Carolina
  • The Wolves are receiving 19 votes in the latest D2SIDA National Media Poll in addition to earning the No. 3 ranking in the Southeast region
  • The team boasts three wins over teams that have been featured in regional polls at any point this season (Lenoir-Rhyne, Emmanuel, and Benedict)
  • Newberry ranks 1st nationally in defensive rebounds per game (36.0)
  • Rank 9th in field goal percentage defense (33%)
  • Meg Essex ranks 5th in the nation in blocked shots per game (3.5)
