Hot shooting from Newberry sinks Catawba

Box Score

Salisbury, N.C. - The Newberry women's basketball team (13-8, 9-8 SAC) used its hot shooting down the stretch to hand the Catawba Indians (13-9, 10-7 SAC) their fourth straight loss by a final of 61-41 on Wednesday evening.

Led by junior guard Nicola Handreck, the Wolves got some revenge on the Indians after they defeated Newberry in Eleazer Arena less than a month ago. Handreck notched 21 points in 35 minutes to lead all scorers. She also added seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals in the win.

Samara Hill returned to the Wolves bench for her second game in a row after missing the previous four games with an injury. Hailing from Frankston, Victoria, Australia, Hill chipped in 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting. She also added three boards in 22 minutes. The guard is 5-of-6 from downtown since returning to the floor.

Newberry took advantage of a 25 percent shooting night from the Indians outscoring Catawba by 14 points in the last two periods, including a 14-2 run in the final quarter. Catawba shot better from three-point land finishing the evening at 29 percent on 5-of-17 shooting. The Indians would also shoot just 46 percent from the free throw line.

Newberry handed Catawba its worst offensive performance of the season as the Indians failed to score under 50 points for the first time this season. The Wolves move to 11-1 on the season in games in which the opponent scores less than 59 points.

The Wolves countered by shooting 43 percent from the floor and nearly 39 percent from beyond the arch knocking down seven three-pointers.

Meg Essex nearly notched her second double-double of the season recording 12 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Essex added another five blocks as she still stands alone at the top of the South Atlantic Conference. The center has 64 rejections so far this season, and is three blocks short of entering second in school history for a career, in just her sophomore season.

Jaya Schultz posted 11 points putting at least three Wolves starters in double figures for the 16th time this season, giving Newberry a 13-3 record on such occasions. The senior also tallied four rebounds and three assists.

Shelby Britten brought down eight rebounds and dished out three assists to go with her seven points.

Catawba junior forward Terri Rogers, who scored 25 points in their last meeting, notched a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Newberry will head back to Eleazer Arena this Saturday to face the Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
