Newberry earns split at Mid-South Classic

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Newberry softball team earned a split at the Mid-South Classic on Saturday afternoon at Tiger River Park, defeating Barton 5-1 in game one before falling to Flagler 6-5 in game two.


GAME ONE: NEWBERRY 5, BARTON 1

Barton struck first in the second inning, scoring a run. Newberry answered in the very next inning. Hailey Drawe scored Shannon McCann on an RBI-double. Rachel Marion slapped a single to left to score Drawe and give Newberry a 2-1 lead.

The Wolves put the game away in the fifth, scoring three runs on three hits and an error. Haley Simonds doubled to left center and Haley Wildes singled to center to notch RBIs for the Wolves.

Emily Marchbanks allowed just one baserunner the rest of the way as Newberry won game one by a 5-1 final.

Christina Linton, Natalie Willis and Simonds all notched two hits. Drawe scored two runs and Simonds collected two RBIs.

Marchbanks earned the win, tossing a complete game allowing just three hits and one run.


GAME TWO: FLAGLER 6, NEWBERRY 5

Flagler got off to a quick start, scoring two runs in the first inning. Newberry struck back by scoring three runs in the bottom of the third. Drawe notched an RBI-single to third and Marion recorded a sacrifice fly.

The Saints led 5-3 after scoring one run in the fourth and two in the fifth. Newberry tied the contest with two runs on two hits and an error. Willis stole third then scored on an error. Allison Van Atta scorched a single to right that scored Simonds and tied the game at 5-5.

Flager scored the winning run in the top of the sixth. Newberry had a baserunner in the bottom of the sixth but would not be able to bring in the tying run.

Linton led the Wolves at the plate, going 2-for-3. Marchbanks was dealt the loss, allowing only two hits and a run. Devon Morrison earned a no-decision after tossing 5.0 innings.

Newberry will host Lander (6-8) on Tuesday for a doubleheader at the Smith Road Complex. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
