Box Score HARTSVILLE - The Newberry women’s basketball team (17-8, 13-8 SAC) earned their sixth win in a row tying a season-high, in Wednesday’s 70-62 final over the Coker Cobras (6-20, 5-16 SAC).
The win gave Newberry head coach Sean Page No. 200 for his career in his 11th overall season.
The Wolves continued to get production from multiple players in its lineup as they have all season long. Five Wolves finished the game in double figures for the fourth time this season, pushing Newberry’s record to 4-0 in such games.
Newberry has had at least three starters in double figures in 19 of their 25 games this season, pushing the Wolves to a 16-3 record when completing the feat.
Despite Coker shooting 48.1 percent from the floor, Newberry would be bolstered by their defense, forcing 19 turnovers from the Cobras earning nine steals and blocking five shots.
The Cobras play would be lead by their bench who earned 44 of the teams 62 points. Leading scorer Iresha Cooper was held to eight points in 26 minutes.
Coker would climb to within five points after a Cooper layup with 2:47 to play, however, clutch free throws by Newberry would ultimately seal the game late as the Wolves connected on 6-of-8 from the foul stripe in the final quarter.
After beginning the game 0-of-4 from the field, Newberry hit eight of their next nine shots from the floor including 3-of-4 from three-point land, to give the Wolves a 19-14 lead after 10 minutes.
Newberry lead Coker by seven points at the break before the Wolves would open up an 8-0 run to begin the third quarter helped by Courtney Lyons, who added eight of her 11 points in the second half.
Nicola Handreck led all Newberry players with 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting. The junior guard also collected four rebounds and dished out four assists.
The Wolves assisted on 19 of their 26 baskets on Wednesday evening, giving four different Newberry players with at least four assists.
Meg Essex tallied 14 points and pulled down a team-high five rebounds. Essex, who earned a conference record 13 blocks in their last matchup vs. Coker, also rejected four shots in the win pushing her season total to 68.
Jaya Schultz had an efficient night for Newberry scoring 11 points on 5-of-7 from the floor in 33 minutes. The senior forward also tied a career-high recording three steals.
Samara Hill picked up 10 points for Newberry in 25 minutes off the bench.
The Wolves will close out the regular season at Eleazer Arena on Saturday, Feb. 25 vs. Brevard. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
